psx4iphone updated. Supports 3.1.x!
This has been a long time coming, but my schedule is just now starting to free up. I have updated psx4iphone to also support the 3.1.x series of firmwares. Included in psx4iphone v1.1.0 is a fix for a bug causing the non-scaled landscape screen to display properly.
Don’t expect too much difference in performance. This emulator will still require an iPhone 3gs or iPod Touch 3rd Gen to really shine. I will be working more on this emulator as I get more free time.
You can download psx4iphone from the ZodTTD Repo which is built-in to Cydia via the included community sources package. This means it is also available via RockApp, Icy, etc. Brief installation instructions are provided within the package info. 
If you run into any issues with psx4iphone v1.1.0 feel free to ask for support via the comments. Just remember, don’t ask for ROMs/ISOs or where to get the BIOS.

After installing psx4iphone, remember the BIOS needs to be all lowercase and titled scph1001.bin then placed in /var/mobile/Media/ROMs/PSX/
The best way to rip your Playstation 1 games is to use a program based on CDRDAO, which outputs BIN/CUE files. The BIN/CUE file format is the most compatible at the moment. ISO / Z / ZNX files are also supported to some degree.

Holy cow, it wasn't a "slight" performance increase for me, it was a huge one! I've been running FF9 on my 3GS at 40 fps constantly! I think I can actually play through a full PS1 game without any problems at all at this point. Runs perfectly!!
Glad it's running better for you. I didn't want to claim a performance increase, but there was some tweaks done to help things perform better since v1.0.0.

Yeah it does! Playing final fantasy 8 with minimal frame skip even through the cut scenes!!! I'll update you when I get the world map ans see how it is then :s lol
OK so 2 days ago I had a problem with Cydia, none of my sources would work and nothing showed up in Cydia. Today earlier I fixed the problem, thought everything was fine but noticed I wasn't getting any updates for any apps I had installed. Now that psx is updated I still haven't gotten a notification in Cydia to update it, so I go to the built-in Zodttd repo and tried to install there, it says no such source was found. So I deleted the source via SSH, now I can't even add the source back. I keep trying to add cydia.zodttd.com/repo/cydia but it says it can't find the repository. Did I just screw myself over?

1. Consider taking a look at your /etc/hosts file on your iPhone/iPod. See if some app installed decided to redirect repo domains like zodttd.com to 127.0.0.1 or such.
2. Might want to try running something like BlackRa1n on top of your install and hope it installs a fresh copy of Cydia.
Those are the only things I can think of at the moment.
I have to say I am really excited that this will now run on my Ipod 3G! Is there a trick to getting the 40 fps? I tried running FF7, and it seems to flip rapidly between 12 through 30 fps.
Also, try going into Cydia>Manage>Packages and find "Cydia Installer" and hit Modify>Reinstall.
FFVIII Runs pretty well on my ipt3 averages at 20fps+ obviously the world map is an issue… The game is playable!

Great job! FF7 runs pretty much full speed on a 3gs in landscape if you disable sound.

One thing I noticed is that no icon for psx4iphone shows up on my springboard, i have to search for psx4iphone to launch it. not sure if that is an issue just on mine, or if anyone else is seeing that…
For those using Cydia, I know you may not like t but it might be worth switching to rock. I was reluctant to do so but, it installs and manages things so much more cleanly than cydia. I use to have all the problems you are talking about such as icons not appearing apps not loading etc.
It might be time to switch!

i have an ipod 3G 3.12 mc model, it’s jailbroken and I had the previous version which didn’t work. I updated through Cydia without problems and have a clean working bios file which I used for another program, but I still can’t get this to work. The app opens, allows me to select my game, and I’ve tried every solution (with sound/without) and the screen flashs and dumps me back to the springboard. Can anyone help??
It finally works! I had the bin names to scph1001.BIN notice the big BIN I renamed it to schph1001.bin and it works! Sounds just terrible… but atleast I can see the concept now.

Also, try running psx4iPhone in Safe Mode, which disables all MobileSubstrate addons which may be causing the crashes.
how do I get it in safe mode? I have SB settings, is that an option?

… this shit isn't working. Crash to Springboard no matter what I do, the second I choose a game the app kills itself. It all worked flawlessly with the previous version, so I really don't think I am making a mistake somewhere.

Playing FF7 and using savestates makes the sound disappear, and loading exiting the emulator and loading that savestate does not help. Any ideas?
Open SBSettings menu (Swipe top of the screen) and press the power button. Then a menu will pop up with a few options, press the "Safe Mode" option. (You may need to try a couple of times)

Skin nr2 for portrait mode does not work very well (at least for me), No button except for START works. Very odd.
Also, is there some way to change the amount of frame skipping like in 0.8.0? I remember getting into some sort of menu by holding down R1 + L1 (or R2 + L2?) where you could do these kinds of changes, but that does not work on this version.

You've probably already been asked this but have you checked the BIOS name?
It should be "scph1001.bin" minus the quotes, all lowercase, even the file extension. And I think permissions need to be set to 755 or something like that. The permissions isn't as important as the case sensitive name though.
For anyone having issues with getting the updated version to work: Check your bios file. It should be named "scph1001.bin" exactly like that. No caps whatsoever. Also if you are having trouble renaming your bin file, go grab the app "iFile" from Cydia. You don't have to pay for it if you don't want to, and it let's you rename files.
Thanks for the tip. The BIOS file is required and tends to be why people have issues.
It was still being tested out, as it not only skips the blit of the frame, but the rendering of it as well. Skipping the rendering of a frame can cause issues in some games…I had it disabled at one point. I will add it back in.

Just noticed that when playing portrait the controls picture is at the bottom, but you need to touch at the top to use them, as if you were playing landscape with your fingers over the game, I assume this isnt correct.

Nope, unfortunately did not fix it. Have resprung/restarted phone, uninstalled from cydia and reinstalled from rock, etc… with no luck. Also verified that /Applications/psx4iphone.app is recursively set to 777
Download iFile from Cydia or Rock then you can change permissions on your phone

It will work. Like ZodTTD said, find a proper BIOS file and name it scph1001.bin and place it in /var/mobile/media/ROMs/PSX/.
Place your ROMs ala .bin, .iso, etc in the same location.
As a preliminary measure, open mobile terminal and change directory to /var/mobile/media/ and change permissions chmod -R 777 to the ROMs folder.
Respring or reboot your phone and open psx4iphone.
Yes, the sound doesn't work that well, that is why it is version 1.1.0, version ONE.

This is awesome Zod! Thanks for updating this. I am now playing Final Fantasy 7 more than I ever have on my 3GS. There is one thing that plagues my personal experience though and I wonder if anyone else has experienced this. Whenever I go to save my game and then return to it there is no sound. It just will not play sound anymore at all.
This was an issue before the update as well but I figured it would be fixed by this update. But it wasn't or maybe it's just a problem I happen to be experiencing. Also, the emulator crashes usually after each time I save a game. Otherwise it works a bit faster for me.

Check SBSettings to see if the icon is hidden. Same thing happened to me a while back but it was with an App Store app, it was just hidden.
I tried Final Fnatasy 7 bin version and iso version .
bin got me 35 fps when I start "new game"(aeris and opening movie).
iso gave me 30 fps when I start "new gmae"(aeris and opening movie).

FF7 crashes the emulator when you first go to tiffas bar and when u ride the pinball looking machine into the basement. I have a iPhone 3gs 3.1.2 blackrain jail broke my ff7 is american rip and is in a bin and cue format I have tried all diforent seting and it crashes all of them. I just played through the Tifa's bar section and did not get a crash. Using a 3gs, running 3.1.2, and jailbroken using blackra1n. Using scph1001.bin.
Zodttd: Great progress! If you can get FFVII running at the same frame rate it is at now, with sound, you should start charging some $ for it for the time you have put into it. I for one will gladly pay up, just as I did for the SNES emulator. Having all these classic RPGs on my iphone at all times, running full speed is amazing!

I finally got around to installing and testing it. Wow, there's a huge performance increase on my 3G. FFVII is now even more or less playable, even in fights. I remember the last time I tried it, it took 2 hours (! literally !) just to go through the intro video, and now I was through in 5 minutes tops. awesome work, zod. Now just if we had Bluetooth controller support through btstack
Anybody know why I cannot hear sounds after I save any PSX game? Or rather figured out why? I currently have FF7 and Xenogears installed. FF7 is a .bin file and Xenogears is a .img file. The sounds all work when I start a new game but for the life of me I can't figure out why the sound refuses to play after I save a game. Not to mention why the emulator quits to the homescreen each time after I save any game. It is supposed to quit back to the emulator front page instead but doesn't.

Hey Zod cool stuff. I don't know if it's just me but I find it pretty difficult to hit diagonals with the D-Pad in either horizontal or vertical mode. Not sure if you're already doing this or if it is even possible but I think creating an 8-directional D-Pad would really help the situation.
Just to clarify by 8-directional D-Pad I just mean coding that the space between say Up and Right registers when you touch it as Up+Right without necessarily having to hit the touch zones of either individual button.
Another option is to create a virtual joystick and then map the joystick movements to the 8-directions.

Download cyberduck, and go into your phone that way. Then right click the bios/app file and click 'info' and go to permissions, and start clicking off till you get '0755'
I boot ff7, get to the image of Cloud's sword and new game/continue. I have no save state, so if I hit continue I cant find anything, and if I hit new game it fades to a black screen then lags out. Has anyone else had this problem? could it be a bad rom?

Grandia and FFVII are both fairly playable now, apart from an annoying bug where the audio will work at normal speed, but the video is slower, resulting in the audio “skipping back” every 5 seconds ago to let the video catch up. This is the best i can describe it, really (maybe this could be fixed by altering the frame skipping? It would be great to be able to tweak this

I’ve also got the same bug a few other people mentioned where there’s no sound after loading a save state, but I haven’t tested whether it works okay with in-game saves yet.

I just got psx4iphone installed on my Blackra1n'd 3GS and am having problems transferring the iso's.
I notice it says to put the games in /var/mobile/media/ROMs/PSX/ but when I try this it says 'not enough free space' and I only have 250mb remaining! I have 10GB remaining in the 'home' folder rather than 'root'.
Any ideas how this can be solved?

ah nevermind.. I was in 'root' not 'mobile' which explains the lack of space!
oh yeah, a bit more information about the sound bug. In some roms it ends up playing the first 10 seconds of music in some places, then just beginning the music from the start again (when the sound skips back, presumably to compensate for the slower video speed)

It might be your bios file. I tried using scph7562-something like that one day, because it supposedly made the emulator run faster and when I ran a game, none of the buttons worked. I replaced it with scph1001 again and it was back to normal.

Hi, just for information, I had the same issue. Before attacking the reactor n5 I had to go back in the train. From here, black screen and back again in the small town with tifa bar. If I go again in the bar the emulator crashes. To resolve the issue I have downloaded a new rom of ff7 and it solved the issue.
pat, try to redownload another rom and restart the game (I know it takes long time, nearly one hour) and try again.

Hello and, firstly, thank you ZodTTD for a great piece of software.
Just want to share my experiences with your software. As mentioned above, FF7 runs really nice and smoothly with sounds disabled in all modes (portrait/landscape/ & scaled). Running your app on an iPhone 3GS 32gig.
I seem to be having the same bug as David, that in portrait mode the touch area seems to be on top of the gaming are and no on the area which is marked off for the gamepad. Also savestates seem to mess up the audio as has been the case for some others (or everyone?) here. This doesn't matter in my opinoin as games usually have a saving system, but of course emulator users have come to expect a save state function. (Normal game saving works perfectly)
One suggestion if I may: It would be nice if the options would have a slider for transparency on the controls in landscape mode, if this isn't too hard to code.
Also I totally agree with Matt, I'd be happy to pay for your app (or atleast contribute), but it really would be nice to see audio working better first.

The issue that I would most like to see fixed is in scaling, which I'm surprised no one else has mentioned. When playing especially in fullscreen mode the aspect ratio of the iPhone causes the image to look horizontally stretched. To maintain the aspect ratio of a television, there should be black bars to the left and right.
This is also the case for the newer versions of snes4iphone (I remember the older versions got it right and included the black bars, but when I finally paid to upgrade, I was very disappointed that the image is now awkwardly horizontally stretched)
Anyone else out there wishing for proper scaling? Honestly, it's more of an issue for me in snes4iphone because that requires scaling to be playable (the unscaled image is just too small for me), where the psx image is big enough to play without scaling. Still, it would be great to have proper scaling in both, and a "smooth scaling" option in psx4iphone would be awesome!

You might not find this information useful, but I'll post it just in case. iPhone 3GS runs FF7 pretty smoothly in Scaled Landscape Nosound WHILE having the iPod on… Hopefully this helps somehow in the betterment of the audio decoding.

Hello, thank you for your cool apps! I have a question: I see a lot of people talking about changing the cycle/clock in psx4iphone and it seems to increase gaming speed. I’m trying to run really really simple 2d games on my ipod touch 2g, like Persona 1, but the fps rate is still ugly/unplayable. I’ve heard you can change clock/cycle by pressing certain buttons, like R1+R2 at the same time, but it’s just not working and nothing changes. I’m running 3.0 firmware btw, can someone help me? Use OpenSSH to get to your game ISO folder. The save files are there!

When I downloaded a ROM (don't worry, I have the games) it had both a .bin.ecm file and a .cue file. I put them both into the folder and changed the .bin.ecm to .bin, and nothing happened when I tried to run it. Any suggestions?

Im running a jailbroken Iphone 2G (fw 3.1.2) and i was able to install psx4iphone 1.1.0 from ZodTTD's source. I added some games in different formats such as .iso and .bin/.cue (with the program iPhone Folders) and put the BIOS file (renamed to scph1001.bin) in the appropriate ROMs directory but every time I try running a game the app returns to the springboard.

try using Pocketisos and compress the .img or .iso or .bin file to a .Z, this will inturn reduce the size of the file by 80% its original size, therefore, increasing speed a little bit more then simply copy the .z file and the other associated file into the directory!!

I put the file Crash Team Racing (.bin) in the ROMs/PSX file, it's extreeeeeeeeeeemely slow. Has anyone got ips to get it running properly or at least a little faster, cause it takes 10 minutes to go to the game menu :O !!
never mind, i got another ROM, smaller in size (500mb instead of 700) and it works GREAT !!! One problem though : when playing (Crash team racing) the racers donc appear, only the kart's wheels, is there a solution to this problem ? otherwise, real smooth emulator =)
Final Fantasy Tactics US Version is Pi*sing me off! there is a major sound issue when the speak bubbles pop up it sounds like i am entering the "X" Zone from Final Fantasy 5. I will try to get my import one to work, Genso Suikoden has a sound loop and will not completely play music but Suikoden 2 works great!! But Zod is Still the Man, and he did a great job on all these emulators practically making wine appear in water bottles at a super market. For all these ports, they are in the pre-stage and there should be bug fixes coming out eventually, but this guy did what was thought not to never be done!!!

I trid converting my crash team racing psx cd to a .bin file, it worked but wouldn't work on my iphone, tried the CTR on that website, works perfectly, same story with castlevania, it works perfectly (iphone 3GS 16gb)

Use winscp (you need wifi) and go to var/mobile/media/roms/psx and paste your game (.bin, .img, etc)
Or use ifunbox (through usb, much faster than winscp) and copy your game to var/mobile/media/roms/psx.
Once that's done, just go to psx4iphone on your iphone and play.

Hey, just installed it and had a Spyro 3 .img lying around, I I thought i'd try it. Game boots fine, but the graphics at the main screen are seriously messed up.
Is this a problem with the .img file? (I don't know how good it is) or a fault with the emulator?
I'll try putting FF7 on and seeing how that goes anyway, but any suggestions to Spyro greatly appreciated (will keep my sister quiet in the car)

Last night I was checking some of your YouTube videos and I saw that you managed to get psx4iphone working on unjailbroken iPhone 3Gs that came bundled with 3.1.2 firmware. I clicked on your post link only to find that it is broken. I can’t jailbreak my iPhone for some weird reason (I tried blackra1n and other methods to no avail). I have installed your app from Cydia and placed the scph1001.bin file in var/mobile/media/ROM/PSX along with the Grand Theft Auto.bin. Every time I click on the .bin file it asks for Portrait or Landscape with or without sound. It then transitions to the game pad then dumps to the main screen. I am running a iPhone 3G 8Gig running 3.1.2 software. Any suggestions or help would be appreciated.

No matter what I do, the damn app will not work. It crashes after I select the ROM (which is in .img format) and won't do anything. I set the permissions on the BIOS to 755 and put a copy of the BIOS in both the Applications folder and the PSX ROMs folder. I'm trying to run on an iPod Touch 2G (a foolish move, I know). Ok it plays to sets of sounds at the same time. The louder one is laggy, the softer one is smooth
at the end of disc 1 you have to save the game then u switch discs and load ur save. this shouldnt be a problem at all.
disc 1 is pretty long. you dont have to put all the discs on there right away. at the end of disc 1 you have to save it on the memory card which does work on the emu. go back to main menu and load disc 2 and load your save and should work fine.
i just converted my .img to .bin using magiciso. the fps has jumped 5-10 fps faster i recommend trying this.
no frameskip. possibly coming out in later release

iam trying to figure this out as well. i managed to transfer the save state from iphone to pc running epsxe 1.7.0 and tried running the save state and it didnt work. it would be awesome to be able to transfer save states or memory cards back and forth between pc and iphone.

I do have a 2nd gen Ipod touch running 3.1.3 and am trying to get it to run the Psx emulator but when it opens up it just crashes (After I select a game that is) so I was wondering if you had any words of the wise on how I may be able to fix this, thanks in advance man.

the bios name must be in low characters, like this:
scph1001.bin
mine did the same thing, make sure your bios is all lower case letters maybe, that fixed it for me

And then after I've saved on my computer, I can take the .svs-file to my phone again and continue to play there?

Installed psx4iphone on my blackra1n jb phone and had it running fine but 3 hrs into playing ff7 it keeps freezing or screen goes blank, i restart it and within 5 mins of playing it, again it freezes. ff7 is a .img file, iphone is 3gs running 3.1.2, permissions set to 777
any help would be greatly appreciated.
Big improvement! I can finally play FF7 on my iPhone 2g! It's still slow, but it's playable now!

I do have 1 major problem though….
After hours of successful gameplay, I just got the submarine on FF7, submerged, and now my X,O,Square,Triangle buttons won't work. The rest of the controls do work (can turn the sub, pause etc.) Tried using different controller skins, landscape , loading earlier game saves, compatibility mode, nothing works.
Any suggestions? Would hate to just leave the game there

i have the same problem a as baseline master please advise really want to keep the game going. cant continue with out the sub and other than that the game works great on horozontally. vertically none of the buttons work. really just want the sub to work.

Hey I'm having an issue with ff8. I just recently started playing, but whenever I Make it out to the world map, the video stops workin, the game will open the menu, and I can see that my character has moves, but only when I get a random encounter or open my menu can I see where my chat has gotten to. This is really making the game unplayable. Is this a bug that will be addressed later or is there some process I'm missing. I'm playing on a 16gig 3gs and it's doing it in both landscae and potrait mode… HELP!!!
I had this same problem, the problem ended up being that my scph1001.bin file was all caps (SCHP1001.BIN) all you have to do is rename it and it will be fixed. At least it worked for me. Good luck hope it helps.

dev, are you still working on improvement of psx4iphone? Even on 3GS, FF7 runs slower than that on HTC HD2 or Samsung Omnia. Also, portrait mode the game is compressed, graphics are fine but letters in game are somewhat squeezed. and in landscape mode, the game does not scale well, it's like an zoomed version of portrait the graphic has lots pixels.
Same issue here besides that everything works fine and fast it's just that once you submerge you can't move or come back up.

I've just experienced this problem too but I've started off from where I finished on ESPEXE (on disc 3).
You can export your memory card files and load them into EPSXE, finish all the *required* submarine missions, save and import the memory card back into psx4iphone.
Not the best solution but it works..

hey, i had psx4iphone working on my 1st gen iphone, when i had (i believe) 3.0fw… I updated to 3.1.2 JB, and now i can open it, and see my iso's, but when i pick one, it crashes to the springboard. I do have the bios, and it is in the correct spot. a bin file will work the best. probably an iso after that. z would, imo, be the worst one to use. while it has the smallest file size, its also the most compressed which may make longer load times and whatnot. i might be wrong tho…
if you are using windows, use winSCP. if on mac, use CyberDuck. the /var/mobile/media/roms/psx folder is accessed that way. the .bin, if you are talking about the bios, google it. scph1001.bin. if talking about the games, google it. psx .bin's, playstation iso's, etc…
try using a different skin, or if you are in landscape, try portrait and vice-versa.

I am trying to play Rollcage on my iPoT 32gb.
You play it with no sound and it has a good constant framerate and loads to the menu, but none of the buttons work so I cannot select the language, let alone play it, then it gives up and quits. :/
The file is an .img, i will try and convert it to see if that is the problem.

Was ready to drop $100 in donation to your program after watching vid of super mario on ipad but after downloading snes4iphone and n644iphone via both cydia and rock then downloading the roms via the application, all i got was rom failed or a black screen. if you would create instructions on how to get this thing working for ipad, i would happily donate. its for my nephews and nieces who want to play it.
Snes4iphone and gpsphone work fine, make sure your snes4iphone is up to date (7.0.0) and gpsphone (6.6.7). N64 and psx do not work on the iPad due to a different rendering method. Probably because it is going from 2D rendering to 3D rendering. Be patient.

I think you should add frame skip option, it seems that PSX games can't get higher FPS in this version, and until you figure it out, adding frame skip option will give us a chance to play some games, i'm sure…
also there is a problem with the Triangle Button… the button is really placed above the Rectangle button…

I was so happy being able to play again final fantsy 7… well… until i saw the nasty graphic bugs… I have black patches in the background during the game, and black patches over in game textes… Guys who put videos of the playing final fantasy 7 on youtube don't seem to have this probleme… Anybody has an idea on how to solve it? I first downloaded a rom, than extracted myself one from my CDs, but no change…

hey, i just downloaded this but im having problems, ive got the BIOS renamed to scph1001.bin, ive put them all into /var/mobile/media/ROMs/PSX, ive renamed them all to .bin, ive got saga frontier as an .img file and all of the permissions have been changed to 755 but it still crashes back to springboard after i select portrait/landscape. i even changed the permissions to 777 and attempted to see what would happen if i changed the BIOs to schph1001.bin but still no luck. can anyone PLEASE PLEASE help me!?!?!?!?!?! ive been trying to get this working for weeks now and im close to giving up :’( email me at dribbwma@hotmail.com if you have any ideas

Alright, here goes. I am also about out of patience with this emu. I’m trying to run it on an mc model 16g 3GS, FW 3.1.3. I HAVE gotten genesis4iphone to work (just not fond of the games) but I have had the same
problem as about a dozen other people on this thread when it comes to psx4iphone: app loads, opens game controller screen and then crashes immediately to springboard. I’m not even talking about FFVII here… Just small games, Medievil for instance. I have been trying for a month now to get this emu to work, and I have through all of this thread and followed every suggestion I hadn’t already heard about. I have the scph1001.bin file in the correct directory, properly lower-case’d and the game .bin and .cue files in there as well. I have even tried other BIOS files, just for good measure: scph7502, scph7001 etc. I have changed permissions for the /Media/ROMs directory (and for /Applications/psx4iphone.app) through both mobileterminal and the GUI in iFILE. I have tried opening the app while in safe mode. Nothing I’ve done has made a bit of difference so far. I’ve got to be overlooking something, but for the life of me, I don’t know what it is. The fastest way to get it to your iPad would be to ssh in. You will need to install opens on the iPad. Do some googling on ssh and you should be good to go

Ok so I'm running psx4iphone on the pad right now (fw 3.2) and I'm having a terrible time with the frame rate. The screen simply shows black until I refresh it (by using the zoom function). The sound also is very distorted and warbly. I've tried setting all my permissions to 0777 or 0755 and I've reinstalled the .bin and .rar files multiple times so I know it's not a software problem. If someone could help me out that would be awesome.
