vlc4iphone is a port of VideoLAN VLC media player's source code to the iPhone and iPod Touch. This port was developed by ZodTTD. The initial intention of this port was/is to allow for less restrictions on formats played on the iPhone and iPod Touch, allow playback of media without syncing to iTunes, and streaming audio and video over HTTP/MMS/RTSP.

At the time of writing, it is available on Cydia for Apple's firmware 2.0 and higher.

[edit] Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

  • Why do i have to make a donation when VLC is subject to GNU GPL?
Under GPL a fee can be charged for binary download of modified code.
  • How do I install vlc4iphone on my iPhone/iPod Touch ?
Use Cydia.
  • How do I transfer files to my iPhone/iPod Touch ?
Follow this SSH tutorial.
  • Where is the VLC config file? Or where else can I change the cache-size when streaming ?
  • What file types are supported ?
It supports the following formats: MPEG (ES,PS,TS,PVA,MP3), AVI, ASF, WMV, WMA, MP4, MOV, 3GP, OGG, OGM, Annodex, MKV, WAV (incuding DTS), DTS, AAC, AC3/A52, FLAC, FLV, MXF, Nut, Standard MIDI / SMF, and Creativeâ„¢ Voice.
That is, of course, provided it has all the abilities of the normal VLC program. More detailed information can be found here.

They "should" be. If it is enable-able within the video by normal means, it should be available in VLC.

Not at the moment.
  • Where do I put the video files on my iPod ?
SSH your files in /var/mobile/Media.
  • How do I listen to vlc4iphone and use other applications at the same time ?
From Cydia download and install "Backgrounder". This enables you to run processes in the background so you can listen to vlc4iphone and use other applications as well.
However doing this can cause your iPhone/iPod Touch's memory to become overloaded and it will start to force shutdown applications to free up memory.
  • Which decoding resolution is supported for H264/mpeg4 video files ?
  • If I have already donated to the vlc4iphone project (when it used to be that you get a link with some passwd to download the file) how do I get the new version ?
  • Can video be played via the iTouch on a television using a 1/8 in. to RCA cable?
